ABOUT THIS COURSE

At the B2 level, you will be able to understand the main ideas of complex text on concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in your field of specialization. You can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. You can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options. With these skills, you will be able to pass the level B2 German exam and receive a certificate according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Topic Outline/Schedule

  • Week 01
    • talk about “Heimat”, understand a text about experiences when emigrating, understand information about diversity in Switzerland and write a forum post, talk about experiences in an intellectual role play, understand a radio report about migration, write a comment on an integration project, Tagesschau, introducing DW Topthema, speaking practice
  • Week 02
    • tasks on the subject of communication, understand a factual text on the subject of non-verbal communication, discuss an article on early foreign language learning, listening to a radio show topic “small talk” and taking notes, understand statements about positive and negative criticism, lead a constructive argument in a role-playing game, writing strategies and writing MT preparation
  • Week 03
    • professions to advise and to be advised, understand a job search survey, talk about the topic "happy at work", give your own opinion on team building events, analyze a résumé, write a letter of application, and conduct parts of an appraisal interview, speaking strategies, speaking MT preparation
  • Week 04
    • talk about cartoons, understand a text on the subject of sport against violence, talk about poverty, understanding a radio show on the subject of internet behavior and online addiction, write a text about future wishes, talk about things that bother you in a role play, Jeopardy to review chapter 1 to 4, listening strategies and MT preparation
  • Week 05
    • understand a text on the subject of children and science, understand a radio feature about lies and write a short story, understand an article about a future vision and develop your own scenarios, understand an article about a future vision and develop your own scenarios, understand a radio program about shopping on the internet, handle telephone calls successfully, reading strategies and MT preparation
  • Week 06
    • understand tips for dealing with colleagues in the workplace, reproduce information from a text, write a personal letter, summarize information about an UNESCO world heritage site, write a short crime story, in an article understanding the reasons why languages die, recognize the positive and negative reviews in a book review, present a book or cultural event, test simulation, DW Topthema, Tagesschau
  • Week 07
    • understand a text on lived history, summarize information from different sources in a short presentation, get to know the errors of history and report about them, summarize information about the division of Germany with comments, understand eyewitness statements and a chronicle of the day the wall fell, notes on an article about making music, comment on texts about the effect of colors, understand dialogues and reinforce statements emotionally, understand a complex lecture on the topic of fear, write an e-mail with tips for decision-making, jeopardy to review chapter 5 to 8, to plan something and give presentations, debate
  • Week 08
    • talk about the role and use of robots in the future, understand and summarize an article about future ideas for the healthcare market, analyze an interview about jobs of the future, write a complaint, talk about future scenarios in books, theater and film, jeopardy to review B1, in particular grammar
